Reindeer Facts!

  • Our reindeer are beloved pets that live on our farm all year around. They are fed specialist reindeer food from the highest quality suppliers and are handled daily.

  • Our reindeer are paired up for visits. This helps us ensure that the reindeer are not individually overworked, and also means that we can decide on the day which of our reindeer are ready to visit you.

  • Reindeer are called 'caribou' in North America, but rest assured they are the same animal!

  • Unlike most deer species both male and female reindeer grow antlers. Also unlike typical deer horns, reindeer shed their antlers once every year - the males usually lose their antlers in November/December. Females can keep their antlers all the way until May, this is because antlers are useful for protecting themselves when they are pregnant and for protecting their babies once born.

  • Reindeer don't have hooves - they have a splayed type of feet similar to camels that help them to spread their weight over the snowy lands they call home. This also means you can hear them clicking when they walk - that's their toes clicking together!

  • In the wild reindeer can live and travel in herds of 10 to 500,000 reindeer! In spring they can form 'super herds' of massive numbers.

  • Reindeer are thought to be one of the oldest domesticated animals - they have been used across the world for meat, milk, and their hides.
